Wellness Care for Your Senior Pet

Senior pets often benefit from early detection of problems.

Did you know that when your pet reaches 7 years of age, he or she is considered a senior? Because a pet’s life span is so short relative to that of their human owners, health conditions tend to develop much more rapidly, threatening the health of the animal if unobserved and untreated. While a once-annual veterinary visit may be adequate for younger pets, the Jaffe Animal Clinic believes that all pets 7 years and older gain significant health benefits from wellness exams twice a year.

Wellness screening in our older companions often begins with the pet owner. You may notice subtle changes in your pet’s activity, such as an increase or decrease in appetite or thirst, behavioral problems, signs of vision or hearing loss, dental problems, arthritis, constipation, or obesity. At the Jaffe Animal Clinic, your veterinarian will perform a comprehensive physical examination, the most important step for detecting such chronic conditions as dental disease, osteoarthritis, or heart disease.

These wellness checkups will give your veterinarian an opportunity to minimize potential health risks through early detection and treatment. 

We also offer a Senior Wellness Package that not only includes the recommended treatments and diagnostic testing, but in addition, provides you with UNLIMITED FREE EXAMS while your pet is signed up.  See the chart below for specific details. 

Even if your pet is not currently due for vaccines,  fecal testing, heartworm testing  or other diagnostics, you can sign up at any time and start receiving FREE EXAMS during the following 12 months. When your pet comes due for his/her annual visit, it will also be included at no additional cost.  


During this visit, the veterinarian may perform some or all of the following services based upon your pet’s needs:

• Comprehensive physical examination
• Intestinal parasite screening
• Heartworm testing
• Senior Wellness Lab Panel and urinalysis
• Dental examination
• Ophthalmicexamination
• Chest radiographs and/or EKG
• Abdominal radiographs
• Osteoarthritis evaluation
• Vaccinations update
• Discussion of nutrition, behavior, and any pet owner questions

Senior pets often benefit from early detection of problems. Nutritional supplements and adjustments in diet and exercise are most successful when we treat the condition early.
