3/ 9/09: Dangers of Cocoa Mulch: Recent toxicities have been seen.  Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Target, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, an xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'  Since there is no way to determine which dogs will eat it and which ones won't, it is best to avoid this product all together.  For more information from the ASPCA, click here

This virus is highly contagious and if treatment is not started quickly, can result in death. The virus is spread in the feces of dogs and can live in the environment for almost 1 year, putting all dogs at risk for the next 12 months.  A common place dogs pick up the virus is walking in areas that other dogs have visited. The virus can be carried home on the feet or shoes of the person walking the dog. Puppies and older dogs are at higher risk, however, any dog that is not up to date on the vaccine is at risk. Dogs that have been properly vaccinated are well protected against this deadly virus. Early signs of the disease include vomitting and diarrhea. This is followed by dehydration, intestinal infection and usually death if not treated. Treatment can be expensive, however, the vaccine is not.  Please make sure your dog is current with the Parvovirus vaccination. The vaccine will prevent the disease but will not cure it once your dog has been exposed.

Starting in June 2008, we will be offering non-anesthetic teeth cleaning.  This new service will not be for everyone, but for those pets with tartar and plaque that has not yet caused severe gingivitis or periodontal disease, this will be a good alternative to dental procedures requiring general anesthesia.  By providing a complete and thorough cleaning and polishing without the need for general anesthesia it will be easier to schedule routine dental care for your pet, without the extra expense of general anesthesia.  Call our office for more information or to schedule an appointment.  For more information, click on the "Anesthesia-Free Teeth Cleaning" button on the main menu.
